BOO! Your Neighbors

Boo bags can be cute
decorative bags or
just a brown lunch bag.
One of my favorite holidays is Halloween. Halloween has tons of easy crafts but most importantly, CANDY.   Our neighborhood has a tradition of "Booing" each other, which usually starts the first week of October.  It gets everyone excited about Halloween and growing up on a farm in rural Ohio, no one ever Boo'd my house!  I love it!

Basically a Boo is a bag of goodies for the kids in the family that gets them excited for Halloween. Our Boo has already been delivered this year and we are sending it on to two more neighbors (cause that's the rules, Duh). So if you're interested in starting a Boo in your neighborhood, here are the rules & the web links you need to make it happen.

First: You need 2 bags or buckets, etc to put your treats into. Fill each one with a few treats or goodies (candy, crayons, little Halloween decoration, etc). In their basket you need to include a picture of the Boo and a copy of the Boo Poem. Then you drop them off at your neighbors house's. When you start this, it is fun for the kids to see the Boo's go up in the window. So hang it where your friends can see it, then the fun gets spread to more houses!

Oh just a word of wisdom, you should probably tell the parent of the kids you're "booing" that it is going to happen. The first time I participated, 1 of my 2 houses tossed the bag because they didn't know who it was from....now I let them know. Have fun!

Bates Motel Haunted Tour

This isn't as family friendly as we usually post, but if you have older children, maybe it is!  The Bates Hotel & Haunted Hayride open this Friday.  For more information go HERE ---but the website creeps me out so you might not want to check it out around the kids!  You will not find me going to the motel or on the hayride, I'm a big scared baby!

Creative Halloween Candy Solutions: What do do with all that candy!

If you are at all like me, you are wonder what the H*## am I going to do with all this candy??!!  Here are a few ideas that might work for you and your family.
  • Using plastic wrap and ribbons, wrap one piece of candy and tie with a ribbon, repeating until you have enough to last from November 1-Christmas or Hanukkah and let the kids eat one a day.
  • Have your children choose 10 (or 20 what ever works for your family) pieces of candy and then  the "Switch Witch" or the "Great Pumpkin" will trade them a small toy or prize for the candy.  Donate to the local food pantry.
  • Hide some now for Christmas stockings (I do this every year and I have to really hide it or my husband will eat it!) I will do this today, the day after Halloween, before all the "good" candy has been picked over, to make sure we have good candy & to ensure that my kids have the same amount of the same candy!
  • Use it in a birthday or holiday party.  Most of the candy we received doesn't have anything Halloween on it, so we will be using our this weekend for my daughter's birthday party.  She is having a Willy Wonka themed party, so candy fits it!
  • Trade in your candy at a local trade and get $1 a pound!  The candy is then shipped overseas to our troops to eat and give to children there. Check out Halloween Candy Buy Backs find a participating office near you!

BOO your neighbors

First, let me say, I didn't grow up in a neighborhood...I lived on a 90 acre farm in rural Ohio...so no one every Boo'd my house!

When we moved to a very family neighborhood a few years ago, our first Halloween we were surprised to find a "Boo" on our porch.

The first time I participated, 1 of my 2 houses tossed the bag because they didn't know who it was from....now I let them know. Have fun!
