I don't really go crazy preparing for storms of the century, because I don't live an area prone to flooding and most of the roads don't flood...and if they do I'll need an ark. There are still a few things I get ready and have on hand, just in case.
1. Clean the gutters. Clogged gutters cause water to concentrate on your house, the goal is to keep the water away from your house.
2. Candles & Flashlights. We pull them out, check the batteries & make sure they work. Then we leave them out-there is nothing worse than looking for your flash light/lighter in the dark!
3. Charge everything! Cell phones, computers, ipads & tablets all fully charged so we can play games & watch DVDs.
4. Dig out the board games for some good, old fashion family fun.
5. Get ice for the freezer. Last time the power went our we lost a lot of food because our freezer didn't stay cold so now we buy ice to help keep everything cold. You can also fill pitchers with water & freeze them. The fuller the freezer, the longer it keeps.
6. Have food that you don't need to cook. Most of us with kids probably have peanut butter, jelly, cereal, etc. I have enough to last at least a week easily, no need to run out.
7. Grill Gas----so we can cook out!
If you take medications, you need to make sure you have enough medication to get through a few days. Little ones? Check your supply of formula & diapers-you don't want to run out of either! And don't forget about your pets, make sure they have plenty of food.
If your power goes out call PECO's emergency telephone number (1-800-841-4141). Stay away from downed lines, don't play or drive through high water and keep in touch with friends, family & neighbors. Help each other out!
Stay safe & dry my friends!
